Act Four, Scene One

1. A4S1 L 70-80. Antonio gives us three short images of how useless
any attempt by Bassanio to save his life will be

• What are they? (I don't know) You may as well go stand upon the beach
  And bid the main flood bate his usual height.
  You may as well use question with the wolf
  Why he hath made the ewe bleat for the lamb. You may as well forbid the mountain pines
  To wag their high tops and to make no noise
  When they are fretten with the gusts of heaven.

What do they tell us about one of Shakespeare's interests?
He likes nature. Shakespeare does a load of stuff that includes the bible.

Do you think this is an effective way of demonstrating the problem? yes?

Each example is an extreme and impossible, what influence does this

have on how you expect the rest of the scene to develop.

2. A4S1 L90-100, Shylock uses vivid comparisons when he wants to

make a point.

• What example does he use to illustrate the fact that the pound of

flesh is his: ‘tis mine and I will have it’ Contract?

• It is much longer comparison than the three used by Antonio but

Act Four, Scene One

1. What does the Duke believe Shylock intends to do? He Believes that he's going to show mercy and pity.

2. What does Shylock intend to do, and what reasons does he give for his decision? He's going to carry on with the contract and get his pound of flesh, for he does not like Antonio.

3. Why must the law be allowed to stand (why can’t the judge dismiss this case) Because Bellario sent a letter. The letter from Bellario sent a replacement since he's busy.

4.Shylock is very clear about the restrictions in the wording of the deed,
how does Portia use these loopholes? He can only take exactly one
pound of flesh no more. On the contract, it didn't say anything about
taking any blood. Which means if there was any bloodshed then
Shylock will die.

5. What penalties does Shylock now have to pay? Are they fair?
Why/why not. He has to give half the money to Antonio and the other
half of his money goes to the town. Since he tried to kill Antonio his
life was put in the hands of the judge. Shlock also needs to give up being
Jew and become a Christian.

6. How do Lorenzo and Jessica gain the result? What reward has
Portia claimed and why is this significant? Instead of Antonio getting half
of Shylocks money Portia decided to give it to Lorenzo and Jessica.

7. Portia tells Shylock ‘The quality of mercy is not strained’.
How does she try to persuade Shylock to show mercy, how much
mercy is she willing to show him (line 345-362), Portia tries to persuade
Shylock to show mercy or at least make sure that Antonio will survive.
Once Shylock disagreed Portia turned on him.

Matariki

Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters. It rises in mid-winter and for may Māori, it heralds the start of a new year.

Matariki literally means the 'eyes of God' (mata ariki) or 'little eyes' (mata riki). According to myth, when Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatūānuku, the earth mother, were separated by their children, the god of the winds, Tāwhirimātea, became so angry that he tore out his eyes and threw them into the heavens.

Matariki is the whaea (mother), surrounded by her six daughters, Tupu-ā-nuku, Tupu-ā-rangi, Waipunarangi, Waitī and Waitā, and Ururangi.

Traditionally, it was a time for remembering the dead and celebrating new life. In the 21st century, observing Matariki has become popular again. Kites, hot-air balloons help mark the occasion.

In the early 2000s Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (Māori Language Commission), the Ministry of education and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, became involved in the revival of Matariki celebrations.

Act Three, Scene Three:

1. Antonio is now convinced that he knows the reason for Shylock’s insistence on claiming his bond. What is it, use the quote from the text to support your answer.

Thou calledst me dog before thou hadst a cause.

But since I am a dog, beware my fangs.

The duke shall grant me justice.—I do wonder,

Thou naughty jailer, that thou art so fond

To come abroad with him at his request.

2. Why can the Duke not ‘deny the course of law’ according to Antonio?
Because it is the law

3. What does Antonio seem resigned to his fate? What two important realizations is this based on? Use lines 8, 21-24, 26-31 to help you.

4. Do you think Antonio’s feelings towards Bassanio have changed since the beginning, why? Yes, Antonio has been more trusting towards Bassanio because he wants Bassanio to succeed.

5.Shylock refuses to consider the idea of Mercy but demands Justice. Consider the following ideas:

• Is mercy the same as forgiveness? No
• Is it easier to show mercy or look for revenge? revenge
• Is justice the same as fairness? no
• Is true justice possible in this case? no
